Visiting Montenegro: A Year-Round Guide to the Best Activities

Every month is beautiful in Montenegro - From snowy peaks to sun-kissed beaches, each month unfolds a different side of our breathtaking country. In this blog post we will write down different activities to do for each month, catering to diverse tastes and preferences.

January - Winter Wonderland:

Montenegro transforms into a winter wonderland in January, attracting snow lovers from around the world. Kolasin, covered in snow, becomes a paradise for skiing and snowboarding enthusiasts.

January in Montenegro is equally enchanting for those who prefer a cozy retreat, or a bit of adventure. Consider exploring Skadar Lake area, where you can sip homemade wine, with stunning views or by the fireplace and be amazed by the warmth of Montenegrin hospitality.

February - Romance in the Bay of Kotor:

As February rolls around, love is in the air, especially in the Bay of Kotor. The charming coastal towns of Perast and Kotor set the stage for a romantic getaway. Take a stroll along the narrow cobblestone streets, enjoy a candlelit dinner overlooking the bay, and be enchanted by the stunning sunsets.

The Bay of Kotor may be the go-to romantic destination in February, but for those seeking a different vibe, head above Kotor City, Vrmac montain. Here you will enjoy the most mystical views of medieval Kotor, and make the best photos.

March – Coastal Adventure in Budva:

As temperatures rise, March is a great month to head to the coast and explore the historic town of Budva. With its charming old town, pristine beaches, and lively atmosphere, Budva is a haven for sun-seekers. Admire the views and smell of the salty Adriatic Sea, stroll along the medieval city walls, and taste the local cuisine at waterfront restaurants. March marks the beginning of the beach season, for those who don`t mind colder water. Make sure to dress warmly as the temperatures drop considerately during the afternoon and night.

We love watching sunset overlooking Sveti Stefan Island, that is our absolute highlight. Check out our Budva tour here.

April - Blossoming Nature in Skadar Lake:

Spring already arrived in April, and the lush landscapes surrounding Skadar Lake burst into vibrant colors. Take a boat trip on the lake to witness the awakening of nature, with blooming flowers and diverse bird species creating a mesmerizing spectacle. The lake's shores become a haven for hikers and birdwatchers, offering an immersive experience in Montenegro's natural beauty. Check out our Fascinating Skadar Lake Tour here.

As spring paints Skadar Lake in vibrant hues, consider an alternative by exploring the coastal town of Bar. Wander through its olive groves, visit the historical Old Bar, and experience the emerging beauty of the Adriatic coastline.

May - Hiking in Biogradska Gora National Park:

May brings warmer temperatures, making it an excellent time for outdoor activities. Biogradska Gora National Park, one of Europe's last rainforests, is a paradise for nature lovers and hikers. The park boasts pristine lakes, dense forests, and diverse wildlife. Explore the hiking trails, breathe in the fresh mountain air, and witness the beauty of Montenegro's untouched wilderness.

Alternatively, head to Adriatic Coast, hit the now sunny cities and walk from Przno to St. Stephen. Make sure you get the swimming suit with you.

June – Ideal month to experience the Northern Part of Montenegro

Our best recommendation for June is to go to Durmitor National Park and walk around the Black Lake, including Tara Canyon and Djurdjevica Tara Bridge. Or do the rafting and ziplining, This is the time when everything becomes green, and it`s a nature`s lover paradise. Check out our tour here.

If you are not the adventurous type, and you prefer a more relaxing time, Kotor Bay area is great for exploring, especially taking a boat ride to Our Lady of the Rocks Island. Live the perfect day on the Adriatic and include a visit to the Oyster farms along the bay. Book our tour to Kotor and Perast here.

July - Adriatic Bliss in Lustica:

For a more off-the-beaten-path coastal experience, and escaping the crowds, venture to the coastal peninsula of Lustica in July.

With its scenic beaches and olive trees, Lustica provides a quieter alternative to the glamorous Budva and Porto Montenegro as well as busy Kotor. Our favorite places apart from Mamula island are – Rose Village and Blue Cave near Zanjice beach.

August - Adventure in the Bay of Kotor:

While August offers thrilling adventures around the Bay of Kotor, consider a day trip to the village of Njegusi. Nestled in the mountains, Njegusi provides a serene escape with breathtaking views and a chance to indulge in traditional Montenegrin cuisine. Make sure to take the scenic route including 25 switchbacks from Kotor to Njegusi. See our tour Majestic Montenegro here.

September – Experience Boka Bay on a catamaran on speedboat

Take a boat ride in Boka Bay and make sure to visit Porto Montenegro. September is the ideal month for all the activities in Montenegro since the temperatures are still warm, and the crowds begin to seize - start in Kotor with the boat, visit Mamula, and back.

Another great activity would be wine tasting in the hills of Virpazar: As the grape harvest season begins, explore the wine cellars of Virpazar for a taste of Montenegro's winemaking traditions. Alternatively, head to the coastal town of Bar and savor local wines while overlooking the Adriatic Sea.

October – See the autumn colors in Lovcen National Park:

October brings a burst of autumn colors to Lovcen National Park. The park's diverse flora transforms into a kaleidoscope of reds, oranges, and yellows, creating a picturesque landscape. Hike the near by mountains for breathtaking views of the Bay of Kotor and the surrounding area.

While Central Montenegro is dazzling with autumn colors, consider exploring the charming village of Rijeka Crnojevica. Nestled along the river, this tranquil spot offers a different perspective on Montenegro's fall foliage. Check our Skadar Lake adventure here.

November – Taste the autumn fresh products of Montenegro

Perfect place to visit in November? Stari Bar city is one of the oldest towns in the Meditteranean, also called Montenegrin Pompei.  Here you can taste the traditional local products, including the perfect fresh pomegranate juice.

The beginning of November is also the last moment to visit Bjelasica Mountain, and take a jeep ride. The colours begin to slowly change and the weather gets cold – so bring a warm coat.

December - Festive Vibes in Podgorica:

While Podgorica comes alive with festive vibes, consider celebrating the holiday season in the Old Royal Capital of Cetinje. Enjoy a quieter ambiance, explore the square decorated with festive lights, and experience the charm of our former capital.

If you are looking for an amazing celebration, check out Budva, Kotor or Tivat - we celebrate New Year for 3 days, 31. december, 1. and 2. January.
